Core concept
Absorb vs collect
Period products work in different ways. The NHS describes pads and tampons as products that absorb menstrual flow. Menstrual cups collect menstrual flow and can be washed and reused. Reusable period underwear is another option.
This difference matters because the instructions, learning curve, and daily routine can be different from one product to another.

Menstrual cup terms you may see
Capacity
The amount a cup is listed to hold, often measured in millilitres. Capacity does not mean every person can wear it for the same amount of time.
Diameter
The width of the cup. It is one measurement people may compare when choosing a model.
Stem
The lower part of some cups. Manufacturer instructions may explain how to use it; removal should not rely on pulling the stem alone if the seal has not been released.
Seal
A cup can form a seal when placed. MonthlyCup’s guide says to release the seal before removal rather than pulling the stem alone.
Reusable
A reusable product is intended to be used again according to its instructions. That does not remove the need for cleaning, storage, and replacement when damaged or changed.
Flow
Flow describes how much bleeding someone has. Flow can influence product choice, but it is not the only factor.
